At Viewmount Counselling and Psychotherapy, we value the child, adolescent, and family.
While we may work with the child or adolescent, it is also critical that the parents and other siblings are involved in some way. When a child or adolescent starts therapy, it is essential to have an assessment with the family first to listen to all their concerns. During the assessment, dates, times, and goals for therapy are established.
One crucial piece of the assessment is to see the family dynamics and the stage of development the child or adolescent is at so that background information can be gathered from birth to the present day.
At Viewmount, therapists sometimes use a genogram. A genogram is a visual tool that maps out family relationships and dynamics, similar to a family tree, but with more detailed information about interactions and significant events. Child and adolescent therapy helps therapists understand the child’s position within the family structure, guiding treatment by revealing patterns and support systems; this is a great way to involve every family member.
Observation in the assessment session is essential as the therapist observes each parent’s parenting styles, how they communicate with one another, and how they communicate with the child or adolescent. During the assessment session, each therapist presents empathetic, authentic, and nonjudgmental qualities. Therapists will also negotiate with the parents about the best way to contact them if something comes up outside of therapy, usually through email.
Here at Viewmount, we offer a WhatsApp feedback group with the parents where any concerns can be explored and responded to as soon as the therapist has the time. It also acts as review sessions as many parents work, making it more accessible for them. This is an excellent opportunity to check in with the parents, allowing us to assess any improvements made and determine if adjustments to the treatment plan are necessary.
